Relationship XXVI – “Keeping Company with a Couch Potato”

This piece was completed while in Atlanta, Georgia and then mailed to Gregory Travis in Brookville, New York on 7/8/2011

RECYCLED TRASH AS ART:

I use old, cheesy record covers and trashy paperback book covers as a starting point for my hand-cut and paste collages. I then use only objects found on the ground, in the trash, junk mail or recycling bin. Sometimes incorporating my own Polaroid photographs. Then I leave them out in public as street art for everyone to enjoy (or destroy.) I have also started mailing small pieces out to some people.

This was my first large collage, almost as tall as me, and also my first piece made specifically for an art exhibition and not as street art. It was shown for “Parcours – 40”, le parcours d’artistes à Mons during the last two weekends in May of 2011. I was working with the group Recycling Collective at the former Royal College of Fine Art in Mons, Belgium. The school had been abandoned for many years but I still found some of the students’ art lying around in the vacant rooms. This large painting of a face was crumpled up in a trash heap so I used it as my canvas to collage on.
