This hand cut-and-paste collage took about 6 hours to complete. Some of the notable items of trash include; a hand-written note to the poet Charles Baudelaire which I found on the ground beside his grave at the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris, a vintage receipt from a Brussels Hotel, the printer’s color marks and top corner from an O’Doul’s six-pack box, an altered phrase from my Delta motion sickness bag, halo rays from a gum wrapper, part of a hotel key card from the Air Force Inn, part of a McDonalds McChicken wrapper, etc, etc…
I left this on a wall in Jacksonville, Florida the same day next to a nice mural on Lomax Street in Five Points.

And it was actually found the same day by Susan G. who wrote:
“So, I get home from work and Sam says “Lance Rothstein is here” I look around the house…but no, not here but he IS in Jacksonville. So I look at the photo’s he’s posting on Facebook and Sam says “That’s Park Street and look at that collage” I’m yeah, that’s Park Street Sam! Sam, tralalala, “Sam that’s Park Street and a new collage” “oH My!” we run to the car and tear across the Acosta Bridge and race to Park Street. And there’s a Lance Rothstein on a wall underneath the new style Bob Slack graffitti. WE NOW OWN A LANCE ROTHSTEIN ORIGINAL!!”

X No.23 – This was another “lava effect” shot from a pack of film that was found in a Sun 660 camera I bought in Atlanta. The film had likely been in the camera for decades but I wasn’t going to waste the 5 shots left in the pack. I collaged this one using trash & found objects.

Relationship XLIV – “Save your Kisses for the Saturdays of Summer”

Collage Relationship XLIV was completed and left on Sunday 7/22/2012 on Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud in the 11th arrondissement in Paris, France.
While staying in Paris for the weekend and visiting the Montparnasse Cemetery, this collage was made using the back side of the LP “Exitos del Verano”.

I collected most of the material as trash from the streets of Paris during my visit there. – Notably, a small post-it message to Charles Baudelaire I found beside his grave. (note: I purposefully selected this particular item because it had already been blown off the grave slab and was likely to blow farther or be picked up as trash.) It says (in French) “For Charles, The greatest poet in the world. With Gratitude” – it is signed but I can’t quite make out the first name. The last name is “St-Jean.”
Some other notable items I picked up and used include: a police notice of car impounding (in triplicate), a fake leaf, the edge of a small black frame, a lottery form, a Pringles chip seal, several flyers, our receipt for some Rainier Cherries we bought on Rue Daguerre, and some multicolored short lengths of yarn (I actually saw a girl drop these on the ground near the Eiffel Tower).

The main phrases in this piece say: “Save your Kisses for the Saturdays of Summer”
“Supershopping Party prescription for ladies and animals!”
“Do not use in cribs, carriages or playpens.” (from a large plastic bag used in product packaging).

This, my 44th collage, took about 6 hours to complete and kept me up until after 6am, leaving me with about 2.5 hours of sleep for the long Sunday ahead.

Relationship XXXIX “Enjoy il Silenzio”

Relationship XXXIX “Enjoy il Silenzio”

This collage was completed and left in La Louviére, Belgium on 7/12/2012 on the front of a vacant bank building at #7 Rue de Bouvy. (see below) I used the 45 record cover “Il Silenzio” by Nino Rosso. This was likely one of the fastest record cover collages I’ve done so far. It was started and finished within about 3 hours while sitting at Les Brasseries Mansart nearby.
