USING TRASH OFF THE STREETS TO MAKE ART ON THE STREETS.
I use only trash and found items to collage these handmade, signed & numbered stickers. They are made to compliment my larger works which in which I use trashy paperback book covers, record & magazine covers, posters, postcards and other mass-produced media as a base for my hand-cut & paste collages, which I usually leave out on the streets for anyone to enjoy (or destroy.)

RJFC Stickers #1-3

My first three stickers!

sticker #1 (to be sent out soon)
sticker #1 (Sent to Lanny R. – a fan in Jacksonville, FL)

I’ve decided to apply my trashy collage to some CD labels to use as stickers. I’ve never seen it done before, but it seemed so obvious to use the stack of ready-made labels in that shape that is instantly recognizable as a CD/DVD. Each one is hand-cut and pasted using only trash and found materials. Each is also hand signed and stamped. “PAY NO ATTENTION TO Ray Johnson Fan Club .com”
I had initially made these first three to post out on the streets of Barcelona, but I actually misplaced them while packing and accidentally left them behind. So now these will be the first stickers sent out to some of my Facebook Fans.

Later I plan to actually collage on some CDs themselves and have some original art on them digitally so stay tuned!

Each one is hand-cut and pasted using only trash and found materials. Later I plan to actually collage on some CDs themselves and have some original art on them digitally.
Stay tuned!

PX No.540 (left in Savannah, Georgia, USA)

picturecrossing No.540 (SX No.453) Another virtually blank shot. It was very hard to keep these pictures covered in the freezing wind so I got several blank or obscured shots. You could barely make out some lines and people walking in the back of this picture shot at the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin, so I drew on it and collaged with trash and found objects.

CAMERA: Polaroid SX-70 Alpha 1 SE – c.1978
FILM: Impossible Project PX600 Silver Shade (box #430 11052010)
This pack had an odd “#32” printed on the back as if they were actually using old Polaroid backing materials.
DATE SHOT:12/30/2010
DATE COLLAGED:10/2012

LEFT:PX No.540 was left in Savannah, Georgia, USA on 11/13/2012 at the Greyhound Bus station near West Youmans Street, (which seemed to be under renovation) just below a red fire alarm. (see photo below) I left it there while transferring busses on my 8-hour ride from Jacksonville to Atlanta.

And it was actually found the same day by Susan G. who wrote:
“So, I get home from work and Sam says “Lance Rothstein is here” I look around the house…but no, not here but he IS in Jacksonville. So I look at the photo’s he’s posting on Facebook and Sam says “That’s Park Street and look at that collage” I’m yeah, that’s Park Street Sam! Sam, tralalala, “Sam that’s Park Street and a new collage” “oH My!” we run to the car and tear across the Acosta Bridge and race to Park Street. Relationship XLIV – “Save your Kisses for the Saturdays of Summer”

Collage Relationship XLIV was completed and left on Sunday 7/22/2012 on Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud in the 11th arrondissement in Paris, France.
While staying in Paris for the weekend and visiting the Montparnasse Cemetery, this collage was made using the back side of the LP “Exitos del Verano”.

I collected most of the material as trash from the streets of Paris during my visit there. – Notably, a small post-it message to Charles Baudelaire I found beside his grave. (note: I purposefully selected this particular item because it had already been blown off the grave slab and was likely to blow farther or be picked up as trash.) It says (in French) “For Charles, The greatest poet in the world. With Gratitude” – it is signed but I can’t quite make out the first name. The last name is “St-Jean.”
Some other notable items I picked up and used include: a police notice of car impounding (in triplicate), a fake leaf, the edge of a small black frame, a lottery form, a Pringles chip seal, several flyers, our receipt for some Rainier Cherries we bought on Rue Daguerre, and some multicolored short lengths of yarn (I actually saw a girl drop these on the ground near the Eiffel Tower).

See the original album cover:

The main phrases in this piece say: “Save your Kisses for the Saturdays of Summer”
“Supershopping Party prescription for ladies and animals!”
“Do not use in cribs, carriages or playpens.” (from a large plastic bag used in product packaging).

This, my 44th collage, took about 6 hours to complete and kept me up until after 6am, leaving me with about 2.5 hours of sleep for the long Sunday ahead.
