First 3 Disc Stickers ready for Barcelona

20121222 1st 3 disc stickers

I’ve decided to apply my trashy collage to some CD labels to use as stickers. I’ve never seen it done before, but it seemed so obvious to use the stack of ready-made labels in that shape that is instantly recognizable as a CD/DVD. Each one is hand-cut and pasted using only trash and found materials. Each is also hand signed and stamped. “PAY NO ATTENTION TO Ray Johnson Fan Club .com” I’ll be posting these up in Barcelona next week and making a few more while I’m there as well as my usual Album Cover collages.

ANYONE WHO “LIKES” MY FACEBOOK PAGE BEFORE 2013 WILL GET A FREE, ONE-OF-A-KIND STICKER AS A NEW YEAR’S GIFT!

Later I plan to actually collage on some CDs themselves and have some original art on them digitally.
Stay tuned!

Relationship LIX “3 of Hearts”

Relationship LIX (#59) – “3 of Hearts”
Collage with found objects. 5×7 inches (approx.13×18 cm)

This is the first in a series of 53 different works based on a vintage, oversized set of nudie playing cards.

The front side of this collage was completed on 12/14/2012. It took me about a month of on-and-off work to finish it. The background “diamond cube” pattern is made of gold foil from discarded chocolate wrappers, a 50 banknote from Congo, and text from a 50’s French mystery serial. The “Sealed for Freshness” bar over her eyes is from a jar of peanuts, the colored dots bar covering her breasts is a printer’s color-check from a discarded bag of pretzels. The B&W label at top right is from a wine bottle seal found on the ground. The “TSA” phrase is from a notice left in my luggage after an airport search. The newsprint text is all from a Tampa Bay Times article on Obama as a wartime president by Molly Moorhead. The VIP & THREE texts are from a junk mail flyer. The Order Form graphic is from an ad for penis enhancement ad in the back of a gun magazine. The LOVE text is from a small packet of granola. The silver halo rays are from a gum wrapper found on the ground.
The back of this piece is still in progress.

PX No.540 (left in Savannah, Georgia, USA)

picturecrossing No.540 (SX No.453) Another virtually blank shot. It was very hard to keep these pictures covered in the freezing wind so I got several blank or obscured shots. You could barely make out some lines and people walking in the back of this picture shot at the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin, so I drew on it and collaged with trash and found objects.

CAMERA: Polaroid SX-70 Alpha 1 SE – c.1978
FILM: Impossible Project PX600 Silver Shade (box #430 11052010)
This pack had an odd “#32” printed on the back as if they were actually using old Polaroid backing materials.
DATE SHOT:12/30/2010
DATE COLLAGED:10/2012

LEFT:PX No.540 was left in Savannah, Georgia, USA on 11/13/2012 at the Greyhound Bus station near West Youmans Street, (which seemed to be under renovation) just below a red fire alarm. (see photo below) I left it there while transferring busses on my 8-hour ride from Jacksonville to Atlanta.

And it was actually found the same day by Susan G. who wrote:
“So, I get home from work and Sam says “Lance Rothstein is here” I look around the house…but no, not here but he IS in Jacksonville. So I look at the photo’s he’s posting on Facebook and Sam says “That’s Park Street and look at that collage” I’m yeah, that’s Park Street Sam! Sam, tralalala, “Sam that’s Park Street and a new collage” “oH My!” we run to the car and tear across the Acosta Bridge and race to Park Street. And there’s a Lance Rothstein on a wall underneath the new style Bob Slack graffitti. WE NOW OWN A LANCE ROTHSTEIN ORIGINAL!!”

Relationship LIV - "EXPOSE The One CHEESE FLAVORED Legend"

My 54TH collage: Relationship LIV – “EXPOSE The One CHEESE FLAVORED Legend” was made using a 45 record cover by “Exposé” called “Point of no return.” I completed it on November 2, 2012 while on day trip to Antwerp to review the Wegee photography retrospective at the FotoMuseum Antwerp. (you can see a Polaroid negative I shot at the exhibition, in this collage.) This one took about 4 hours of solid work and was made while sitting at the Starbucks in the Antwerp Central Station. I finished it just in time to post it up and catch the last train back home to Mons, a 2 hour journey.
I left this collage the same day on a bricked wall across from the Antwerp Central Station along Pelikaanstraat. (see below)
